Red Cross First Aid Instructor Development Pathway
1. Evaluate Skills & Check Prerequisites CLASSROOM (7 hrs)
- 18 years old
- Valid Professional Responder certification (FR/EMR/AFA/MAFA)
- Successfully complete skills evaluation
2A. Fundamentals of Instruction ONLINE (8 hrs*)
- Complete online requirements on participant’s own time
2B. Fundamentals of Instruction CLASSROOM (15 hrs)
- Complete classroom component on the application of fundamentals
3. Discipline-Specific Component CLASSROOM (15 hrs)
- Complete discipline-specific (ex. First Aid, Wilderness, EMR) component focusing on the specific skills of that program.
4A. Teaching Experience ONLINE (45 min*)
- Complete the teaching experience online module
4B. Teaching Experience CLASSROOM (40-80 hrs for Professional Responder)
- With the support and supervision of a teaching experience supervisor, complete a co-teach of a full course of the discipline-specific program (ex. First Aid, Wilderness, EMR)
*completed on participants’ own time
Course Details:
- 37-40 hours CLASSROOM component
- 8-10 hours ONLINE component
- 40-80 hours CO-TEACH component
- Additional preparation & planning work on own time
- 3-year certification as Professional Responder Instructor
- Conducted by a certified Red Cross First Aid Instructor Trainer
Completion Requirements:
- 100% attendance
- Skills demonstration
- Complete Practice Teaching Assignments
- 80% min. passing grade on written exam
Post-course Requirements
- Online Component
- A 40-hour FR/MAFA OR 80-hour EMR/AFA Course co-teach is required to complete instructor certification – co-teach at the highest level you wish to teach
- Meet the requirements of the co-teach form as outlined by the Instructor Trainer
